Moving Day
Moving Day is the first of three pamphlets about affordable housing. New York City is in a severe housing crisis, as is most of the rest of the country, so I want to spend a year thinking about what kind of housing we build, where, why, and for whom. There is a long history of affordable housing programs in NYC and I want to spend the year looking at what kinds of housing we have imagined in the past to try to see what we should be working towards in the future.
This pamphlet focuses on when and how did rent regulation start in NYC and how do the different programs work, who regulates rent in NYC, how do you find out if your apartment is rent regulated and what to do with that knowledge. It’s focused on rent laws in New York but I think, given the cost of housing across the US these days, it could be illuminating for those living elsewhere.
